Motorcycles have earned a reputation for being dangerous according to the high statistics on accidents and fatalities connected to them. When a collision occurs involving a motorcycle, 77 percent of accidents occur from being struck in the front and only 7 percent from behind. Forty-seven percent of these accidents result in the motorcyclist’s death. Motorcyclists are 35 times for likely to die in a crash than a passenger in a car.
Over the course of my business, I have represented 25-30 motorcycle accident victims and their families, and almost all accidents occurred because the motorcyclists were not seen by other drivers. Many times the drivers are not seen because of excess speed, over braking, or alcohol involvement. Accidents like these often result in concussions, nerve damage, broken arms and legs, fractured joint bones (elbows, knees, wrist and ankles), and too often, death.
So what can you do as a motorcyclist to be safer on the road?
- Wear a helmet– Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of death by 37 percent.
- Be visible– Wearing brightly colored gear and helmet will increase visibility.
- The proper gear– durable jacket, pants, gloves, and boots help protect you from road rash and other injuries if you do crash.
- Don’t be reckless-Weaving in and out of traffic at high speed, is reckless driving and increases your chance of not being seen by other drivers. Sever injuries and death is a likely outcome of this kind of conduct.
- Never drink and drive– alcohol and motorcycles are an even more deadly mix than alcohol and automobiles.
