  • It’s that time of year again, time to gear up for winter.

With the first snowfall, the amount of car accidents increases and we all must become more cautious of our surroundings.

Here are a few preventative measures you can take to protect yourself from other drivers this winter:

    Winterize your vehicle

Be sure you have the correct tires for the season to maintain control on the icy roads. Before winter sets in, make sure your brakes, heater, exhaust system, lights, windshield wipers are all in working condition as they are crucial parts to keeping you safe while driving in the winter.

    Be aware of the conditions

Drive according to the road conditions. Simply stated, slow down. If it is too icy, stay in. Give yourself plenty of room between you and the car in front of you, in case they hit an icy spot. Give yourself enough time to get to your destination without rushing.

    Be prepared for the worst

Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. Include: flashlight, flares, reflectors, tow strap and light tools. Make sure to include winter clothing: a blanket, extra hat and gloves. Alaskans traditionally help others in distress. A well-stocked emergency kit can help those you assist as well. Keep your cell phone on your person, in case you do get into an accident and you need to call for help. Always have up to date insurance information with you as well.

The Alaskan winter provides great opportunities for many fun activities. Just remember…it’s Alaska! Enjoy this winter. With a little awareness, forethought and preparation getting to and from work or your winter activity can be stress less and safe.
